Special Gifts for Special People
The memory of the Righteous is Blessed. Proverbs 10:7
Gifts make a memory that reflect on both the giver and the receiver. The gift becomes an extension of the kindness shown. Then the gift is remembered sometimes for a season, sometimes for a lifetime, and sometimes for generations. The gift does not have to be extravagant. It just must connect with a special moment in a life.
McClard’s Gifts is a place of memories. Originally, it was a drug store started in 1949 by my Dad in a small rural town. People came to the store to get medicine for their family as well as gifts for special occasions. Sick children came to the store after going to a Doctor. They were often rewarded with ice cream for being such good patients. Grandparents and Parents brought children to the store for a special fountain treat which ranged from a simple ice cream cone to Milk Shakes, Banana Splits and Sundaes. Years later the children would come back as adults and tell their story of the gift that they had been given. Sometimes it was about a grandfather who would bring them to the store for a Chocolate Ice Cream Cone. Sometimes it was about a parent who brought their child in every Saturday for Ice Cream and even though it was a nickel, some children now wonder how the parent afforded it. These children in turn brought their children and grandchildren to the store for the same reasons. Therefore, these gifts were remembered for generations and people revisited the store to make new memories.
My Dad and my Mom were a big part of that because they made everyone feel like Family. My Dad would always call everyone by their first name when they walked into the door making them feel right at home. He would go out at night to get medicine for the sick in the community. If they could not afford it, he would charge it to them with no interest until they could pay it back. Mom also worked in the store and was often chatting with those who came in. There is rarely a day that goes by that someone does not come in the store and tell us a memory.
